What is EEG?

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that measures electrical activity in the brain, often referred to simply as an EEG. This test utilizes small metal discs called electrodes that attach to the scalp. Brain cells communicate via electrical impulses, and this activity is represented as wavy lines on an EEG recording. Since brain cells are active all the time, even during sleep, understanding this activity is crucial. An EEG is a key component of EEG education and is one of the primary tests used to help diagnose epilepsy. Additionally, those pursuing an EEG technologist program will find that an EEG can also play a role in diagnosing other brain conditions, making electroencephalogram training essential for professionals in the field.

What does an EEG technologist do?

Electroencephalogram (EEG) technologists, trained through specialized EEG education programs, use advanced equipment and processes to monitor a patient’s nervous system activity. They are responsible for setting up, performing, and monitoring EEG tests, also known as electroencephalograms, which record the electrical activity of the brain over time. These professionals complete comprehensive electroencephalogram training and work under the supervision of epileptologists, neurologists, or other medical doctors.

Eligibility

Applicants must possess a high school diploma; an associate degree is preferred. Degrees may be in any field of study, though a background in health sciences is strongly preferred, especially for those pursuing EEG education.
