  • Fall 2026

What is Intraoperative Neuromonitoring?

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) describes a group of procedures used during surgery to monitor neural pathways during high-risk neurosurgical, orthopedic, peripheral nerve, and vascular surgeries. These procedures assist surgeons in preventing damage and preserving functionality of the nervous system.

What does an IONM technologist do?

An IONM technician’s responsibilities begin before the patient enters the operating room and extend beyond the completion of surgery, particularly within an intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM program). On the day of a procedure, the IONM technician meets with the patient to conduct a brief evaluation, explain the monitoring process, and address any questions from the patient or family members regarding the procedure and its safety.

In the operating room, the IONM technician prepares the patient by applying specialized recording and stimulating electrodes to appropriate locations based on the surgical procedure and anatomical considerations. Throughout the operation, they operate computerized workstations to continuously collect neurophysiological data using various monitoring modalities. This continuous monitoring is essential for the effectiveness of the IONM program.

The IONM technician works in constant communication with remote supervising physicians who view the same data through telemedicine platforms. Together, this collaborative team interprets the neurophysiological information and advises the surgical team of any significant changes in the patient’s nervous system function, leveraging their neurodiagnostic certification to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Eligibility

A minimum of an associate degree is required, though a bachelor's degree is preferred for those interested in our IONM program. A current neurodiagnostic certification would also be accepted.

All applicants must complete the following steps:

  • Application
  • Copy of diploma or neurodiagnostic certification
  • Resume
  • Zoom interview

How long is the IONM Program?

APEX's IONM program spans 11 months and includes built-in breaks.

Program Cost

IONM Program Tuition: $16,000

We offer flexible payment plan options for our intraoperative neuromonitoring program, which also provides pathways to neurodiagnostic certification through ABRET.
